Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) is a vibrant non- governmental organization (NGO) involved in human rights work in the coastal region of Kenya since 1997. MUHURI wishes to invite suitably qualified Kenyans to apply for the position of Executive Director which is currently vacant.


- Chief Executive and the link between the Secretariat and the Board of Directors
- Provide strategic direction to MUHURI’s programs in line with the vision and mission of the organization
- Lead MUHURI staff in rigorous political and socio-economic analysis to ensure innovative human rights programming in response to challenges of the new constitutional dispensation in Kenya and global trends in the African continent
- Provide oversight to the management of MUHURI’s programs, resources and assets
- Lead the fundraising efforts of MUHURI
- Secretary to the MUHURI Board of Directors
- Official spokesperson of MUHURI with close consultations with the Board of Directors
- Reporting to the Board of Directors

Qualities required

- Holder of a degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution of higher learning
- Experience of NOT less than five years working at management level in a human rights organization
- Evidence of strong analytical skills and good understanding of human rights issues at local, national, regional and global level
- Profile and track record of a human rights defender and active participant in the reform movement in Kenya and/or beyond
- Reputation of high integrity in positions of leadership held previously
- Widely networked/connected within the human rights fraternity and beyond
- Good command of spoken and written Kiswahili and English. Fluency in other international languages will be an added advantage
- Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills
- Good understanding of the local culture and population dynamics

Terms of reference

- Three years contract (renewable)
- Six months probation before confirmation of the contract
- Competitive salary and an attractive package of benefits
- Duty station: Mombasa
- Frequent travel to other counties in the Coast region
