Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) based at the Coast of Kenya. It began in 1997 to enhance the struggle for human rights with a view to contributing towards the national and international efforts to promoting and protecting the enjoyment of human rights and civil liberties.
Following the need of having a communication, research, monitoring and evaluation officer in the organization, Board of Directors have approved a vacancy to be filled under MUHURI’s Programme Departments. The organization therefore wishes to recruit one (1) suitable person tofill in the position.
1.Communication Officer (1 position)
As the Communication Officer at MUHURI you will be responsible for promoting the visibility of our organisation in Kenya and worldwide. You will develop MUHURI’s Communications strategy and work on media relations and ensure a conflict sensitive media response. We are looking for someone with excellent communications skills and extensive experience in communications. Public relations will be an added advantage.
The communication Officer will be responsible for transmitting often complex messages of the organisation into easy and accessible information for the general public. The ideal candidate brings with him/her established contacts with relevant media outlets and journalists. The successful candidate must possess strong interpersonal and coordination skills and thrives well in collaborative processes.
The communication Officer will be reporting directly to the Executive Director and will work closely with the human rights officer in the field and programme officers at the secretariat level.
Responsibilities and Job Description
•Work closely with the Executive Director and other members of the team to develop and implement communications activities that advance MUHURI's mission and strategic initiatives
•Provide strategic direction and planning for all of MUHURI's communications initiatives, and help to develop internal capacity to support effective communications
•Position and manage the MUHURI brand
•Create communications opportunities for increased organizational visibility and respond to emerging/urgent external events that intersect with MUHURI's mission
•Write and/or edit content for all communication channels, in coordination with external contractors
•Review and strengthen all of MUHURI's communications materials, tools and channels
•Over time, play an important role in helping MUHURI and our programme partners to craft effective public advocacy strategies
1. Develop a Communications Strategy
•Develop MUHURI's Communications Strategy and external communications activities (materials, channels and collateral) and suggest areas for improvement and action;
•Develop and manage the implementation of a focused, measurable and achievable annual Communications Strategy to help ensure MUHURI has appropriately identified and is able to effectively engage key external stakeholders and audiences;
•Align the strategy with MUHURI's plans and coordinate and provide direction to manage communications activities around the projects in the organization
2. Strengthen Programme Communications
•Work with programme officers, Managers and staff to develop and implement strategies and communication activities to support and raise the visibility of MUHURI's programmes
•Develop communication tools related to MUHURI's key programmes, as needed
•Work closely with the programme team to support communications work related to MUHURI's programmatic events, and participation in external conferences and special events
3. Strengthen MUHURI's Online Presence
•Develop ways to maximise the communications value of MUHURI's newly-revamped web site and monitor its effectiveness;
•Post regular, ongoing online content updates based on programme developments (announcements, article links, stories, news and events), including web site, Facebook, Twitter, blogs or other social media tools as recommended in the Communications Strategy;
•Raise the online visibility of MUHURI and of its issues (for example, through suggesting additional women's rights and human rights sites, blogs, and so on for a presence/ interaction/sharing of resources)
4. Manage External Contractors
•Develop a comprehensive database of external communication contractors (for example, writers, photographers, videographers)
•Develop terms of reference and manage hiring and deliverables of external contractors
Key Characteristics: An ideal candidate should:
•Be a Graduate (Master's Degree preferred, or equivalent experience) in the area of communications/social science/ human rights/ international development or related fields;
•Have 3-5 years of experience in external communications; preference will be given to people with experience with NGOs;
•Have an understanding of issues relating to Human rights, social justice and women and children rights of all people, and a commitment to advancing these rights;
•Be an excellent writer in English and be able to communicate well with both internal and external audiences;
•Be detail oriented and thorough, with an ability to self-motivate and produce high-quality work;
•Be committed to ongoing professional learning and sharing knowledge with MUHURI staff.
•Substantial, relevant experience in journalism or public and media relations in the non-profit sector, ideally on topics of social justice and human rights
•Experience in conflict sensitive media work and investigative Journalism
•Ability to design printed materials with Adobe In Design or Photoshop is an advantage.
